I was considering replacing my salt type water softener with one of those electrolysis types, until I found out that they run about $2,000.00, and they don’t actually remove any minerals, etc., they change the physical properties, giving them (minerals) soft or round edges, so they won’t bond to your pipes, etc. This also doesn’t help me because of high iron content in my water would require an additional filter to remove the iron. I’ll stick with what I have. Salt isn’t that expensive !

My wife and I researched this big time about 8 months ago. Consumer reports really liked the Kenmore (Sears) water softener. They start around $200 (low end) and $1000 high end.
We purchased a $600 model (on sale) and are very pleased with the water and the (lack of) salt use. Family of 4 – with very little salt use… Hope this helps – good luck!

“Best” and “Cheapest” do not mix.
You can buy used oats cheaper than new oats, too; just try to get your horse to eat them.

There is no such thing as a salt free water softener. Not one that actually softens water anyway. I don’t know why you want a salt free one. Is it the expense? Salt is dirt cheap when compared to the benefits of soft water. Is it the sodium in the softened water? Yes, a softener will add sodium to your diet if you drink it or use it for cooking. Just avoid using it for those purposes. Go shopping and price them out. There are a lot of good ones out there, but they aren’t cheap, what ever that is.
