Please no more answers from those of you who have or recommend salt softeners. This question is for those who have alternative softeners to see if they work and how people like them. Example, magnetic systems or catalyst systems ect.

Bob asked:

I need to add a water softener in my house because of hard water but I have a septic tank and leach field. Most of the leach field is under the lawn but I am sure tree roots are very close to it. I am afraid that if I use a salt based water softener then over time the salt may affect the septic tank and even more importantly the salt discharged from the softener will go into the leach field and eventually will kill the trees and maybe even the grass. Does anyone have experience of trees growing near a leach field after using a salt based water softener for 20+ years? The other option is to go with a salt free water softener but they don’t seem to be offered by guys like Sears, Home Depot and Lowes. I have been told the non salt based water softeners don’t work ( or work very poorly ). My soil is almost totally clay. Thoughts / comments? Thanks.

If so, I need proof. A site with data would be GREAT.

Self Aware asked:

Recently, I bought a new water softener for my pool filter. I bought it directly from the inventor who had traveled the world selling “over a thousand” of them. (Thinking about it now, that’s not that impressive.)

When I received this “water softener” it looked like it was simply in a PVC pipe. . . but the PVC pipe was large enough to see inside of it. So I looked inside and saw Marbles. All the way down. They didn’t even look like they could be anything else. There were a few that had the little yellow swirl in it, even.

The guy explained how this works and it seemed somewhat phony to me. The homeowner, however, ate it up and agreed to pay for this water softener. It uses no electricity. No salt water. No brine. It’s not an ionizing one. Nothing. The inventor gave it to me for a month free trial, but now that I’ve seen that it’s just a bunch of marbles inside a PVC pipe, I’m wondering about the credibility of this device.

Is there any possibility that this will actually soften water? He said it’s supposed to raise pH, too. Has anyone ever heard of this?
