I have purchased a water softener for my home and everything I read says using 3/4 inch pipe to install, My home right from the water meter has only 1/2 inch copper pipe, my question is will the 1/2 inch copper tubing be sufficient or do I need to repipe the entire run with 3/4 inch tubing. I have done a flow test and their seems to be sufficient flow.

OK all you professional and DIY plumbers, here goes…Water comes from street through 3/4″ PVC (schedule 40) pipe. The PVC pipe changes to 3/4″ copper about four feet from the water softener. Copper is used until the water softener is reached. Copper connections are used at the intake/output valves. The water leaves the softener in 3/4″ copper for about four feet. There it changes back to 3/4″ PVC (schedule 40). Can either PVC (schedule 40) or copper be used (together or seperately) in the water lines for the softener?

We recently had a pressure regulatore valve installed. The entire water system was shut down. Prior to this time when we used the water we did not hear any knocking in the pipes or the hot water heater.

Since the installation of the PRV everytime we use the hot water we hear knocking in the pipes and hot water heater while the water is running and after it it turned off for about 10 minutes.

Any ideas of what this could be? We have a water softener too.

I have a quote for a Culligan Platinum Series water softener for $3,100 including installation. I can also go to Lowe’s and purchase a similar Whirlpool unit for about $700 not including installation.

My question is, “Is it worth it to pay the premium for the Culligan unit?”

FYI, my installation is not easy. It needs to be installed outside with plumbing run underground for about 15′. All of this is included with the Culligan.
